This lecture looks at stained glass, its design and the creative process during the 19th and early 20th centuries. It will take a particular look at examples in the East and West Midlands.

Since the earliest use of gold around 6,500 years ago on the Bulgarian coast, it has been desired and shaped by generations of craftsmen. The skills revealing unparalleled expertise and flair can be deciphered through the objects they make which provide crucial insights for understanding the societies involved.

The Rock and Roll Era: Pop Art in the Swinging Sixties

Pop Art is a figurative, realist, brightly-coloured response to the modern world of consumerism, youth culture and the mass media of Britian and the U.S.A. Pop artists were fascinated by their own modern era – the post-war world of advertising, Hollywood films, pop music, comics and the cult of celebrity.

Mother of Winston, Jennie Churchill was his adviser, tutor, networker and social secretary. When her husband died young she was forced to try and earn a living and turned her hand to magazine editing, writing plays, and buying and decorating houses. She died tragically young in 1924, a victim of the fashion she so loved.

From Posset Pots to Pew Groups – The Fashion for Collecting Early English Pottery

The lecture will look at the vitality and diversity of early English pottery from the first English delftware of the early 17th century to the development of Staffordshire white salt glazed stoneware of the middle 18th century. It will include curious objects and will attempt to explain the enormous popularity of these pieces for modern day collectors.

A Medieval Masterpiece: The Hotel-Dieu at Beaune

The Hotel Dieu in Beaune, founded by Nicholas Rolin as a hospice for the poor and sick, gives a rare and fascinating glimpse into the medieval world. This window into the artistic tastes of the Burgundian court, at the time one of the richest in Europe, houses ‘The Last Judgement’ painted for Rolin by Rogier Van der Weyden.
