Visit to The Wedgwood Museum, Stoke-
The Wedgwood Museum, which opened in 2008, is a treasure trove for those interested in decorative and fine art, ceramic design or social and industrial history. Winner of the prestigious Art Fund Prize in 2009 and appointed to the UNESCO Memory of the World Register in May 2011. Josiah Wedgwood was a fascinating individual – potter, scientist, artist, philanthropist and entrepreneur – and one of the most important figures of his age.
The Wedgwood ‘Discovery Day’ offers visitors a personal welcome to the museum and, after refreshments, a themed lecture, guided gallery tour, handling session or access to archive material.
Housed in a stunning contemporary building, the collection of 6,000 objects is displayed chronologically from 1730, the birth of Josiah Wedgwood, to today and features some of the world’s finest ceramic pieces.
Our themed lecture will be ‘Wedgwood and Artists’, we will look at some of the most influential of these artists who are renowned in other disciplines rather than ceramics such as; Joh Flaxman, George Stubbs, Walter Crane, Thomas Allen, Eric Ravilious, David Shepherd, Edward Paolozzi amongst others and provide a new perspective on art and design.
Further details later in the year.
